This video by Youtuber Hungrybear9562 just exploded all over the internet this past week. On January 8th 2010 Bear comes across a stunning view of two rainbows and proceeds to lose his shit. At first it sounds like he is having an orgasm, but then he starts crying asking "what does it mean?". Most people think he is high, but I think the man just loves him some rainbows. 

As of this post it has skyrocketed to 1,715,856 views:

As you can see it took quite some time for this video to be discovered. As soon as it was found it spread fast.

When I first read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, the idea of the meme immediately grabbed my attention. I was still in high school, and the word had not yet been picked up by the general populace. Richard Dawkins was only known as a famous evolutionary biologist, and the biggest internet meme was hampster dance.

I am disappointed that memetics is still struggling as a science, but I think it is only a matter of time until it is accepted in the scientific community. Darwinizing Culture: The Status of Memetics as a Science is an interesting read, and covers many of the heated debates about memetics.

This TED talk by Susan Blackmore is a nice quick introduction to memes.  The Meme Machine was one of the first books to defend memetics as a science.

Daniel C. Dennett approached religion from a memetic standpoint in Breaking the Spell.

Keep in mind when Darwin came up with natural selection, no one had any idea what the mechanism behind it was. Mendel's work was not recognized until the early 20th century.

I can't wait till we are able to decode the mechanics of meme replication. Memetic engineering may sound a bit unsettling, but it has been going on since before we even knew what a meme was.

Thalassophobia is a morbid fear of the sea that has led to some interesting image memes. Threads with images of giant sea creatures threatening tiny humans are not uncommon these days.

I completely understand why this meme is big. Whenever I'm in the ocean I imagine gigantic creatures like this below me.

As far as I can tell this meme is limited to 4chan, but I could be wrong.

I posted this to BuzzFeed the other day and it went viral fairly quickly. This guy's reaction to nature footage is just great. I love how he titled the video "This is why evolution is awesome". I'm glad he didn't take the Insane Clown Posse "fucking miracles" approach.

This short pixel art/chiptunes documentary is great. One of my favorite indie game developers Jason Rohrer makes an appearance.

I found this awesome website sarien.net where you can play old Sierra adventure games ported to Javascript and Canvas (via @OMGWTFGAMES). You can actually join other player's games and talk to them. I basically learned how to read playing Space Quest. I just had a flashback from when I was 5 years old and accidentally formatted the hard drive on my 386. My dad was pissed.
