Cephalopod Memes

Cephalopods have become a part of internet culture. The most notable may be Lovecraft's Cthulhu (pictured above), but recently the mythical version of the giant squid (Architeuthis) has gone viral with the 'release the Kraken' meme.

Octopuses (yes it is right, look it up):

My favorite cephalopod video is of this Octopus vulgaris blending in almost completely with some coral.

This coconut carrying octopus got over a million views.

Cuttlefish:

Squid:

The Humboldt Squid (Dosidicus gigas) has grown very popular in recent years. I suspect this has something to do with their terrifying feeding frenzies and barbed hooked tentacles.

The 'vampire squid from Hell' (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) is quite popular among squid geeks.

And of course there is the awesome Laughing Squid website which also runs squid.us.

Oh, and you may have noticed the octopus graphic for this blog. Yes I refuse to eat calamari.
