A meme is a unit of culturally transmitted information that replicates via human social interaction.  

Richard Dawkins coined the term in The Selfish Gene in 1976.  The idea of the meme was used to illustrate how Darwinian natural selection will occur anytime something is able to replicate itself.  These days the once world reknown evolutionary biologist is known as 'that atheist dude'.

Today we typically use the word in reference to viral internet memes. While internet memes are an obvious focus, I think all viral information is interesting.
